A workaround:
  cd ~/.wine
  mv drive_c harddiskvolume1
  cd dosdevices
  ln -sf ../harddiskvolume1 c:

BTW I ran into this while trying to add msxml4 support to winetricks;
at the moment, you can reproduce this with
  wget kegel.com/wine/winetricks
  sh winetricks msxml4
