After changing orm to backbuffer, the game doesn't crash but it hangs and the terminal output ends with: fixme:d3d:IWineD3DBaseSwapChainImpl_GetRasterStatus iface 0x15d740, raster_status 0x32e4e4 stub! I also noticed that at least the first intro video (company logo) was playing correctly in Wine-1.2.3 but the game hung afterwards (only with orm=backbuffer; with orm=fbo the game always produced the same crash as it does in the current git version). Since Wine-1.3.0 the game hangs (without showing anything) when orm=backbuffer. The problem can be reproduced in the demo, too. For this application itself, how did you manage to go through the admin rights needed on the first startup with the retail version (i.e. not the demo)? Maybe the DVD version you own utilizes some kind of DRM. You can check the installed game by using ProtectionId: http://pid.gamecopyworld.com/ProtectionID_v6.4.0.rar

I looked a bit at the demo, http://source.winehq.org/patches/data/79694 should help with the first crash. After that I run into the crash in comment 2. I haven't looked into that one yet, but if that didn't happen before it may be a regression.
With the patch the game hangs after starting. The value of 'bUseHardware' variable in config.ini decides whether the game uses d3d hardware acceleration or not. When it is disabled (bUseHardware=0) then the game crashes as in comment #0. this bug is messed up, it has been recycled a few times for different issues. Either start a new bug, targeting what looks like a Mono issue or change the summary accordingly.
Besides the workaround mentioned in last two comments this can probably be worked around using native .NET Framework too (as usual).

No, this patch can't be applied to recent wine. It doesn't fix the problem. +d3d shows that the problem is deeper, not in GetRasterStatus. I tried the demo. I have no full version of any of those games. I get 2 errors while installing the demo. I don't know how serious those are. While starting the demo I get crash both wine-git and wine-staging 1.9.5. I am not even trying to quess the reason the backtrace and fixme lines aren't so clear on this.
