This is basically due to Wine's dmusic being a big, broken mess. The "regression" commit that you identified enabled the game to get further into the dmusic initialization process, but then it runs into a later crash. I have a patch to fix that crash, but then it crashes again while trying to load dmusic style files. I'm working on cleaning that[1] up. In the meantime, you should be able to work around this by installing both 'dsound' and 'directmusic' with winetricks. This is a dmusic bug, which will likely never be fixed since no one is interested in working on dmusic.
