for several days i've been getting this error message at the end of xubuntu
updates? it's harmless?

You're getting that message because that repository no longer exists. The only
thing surprising about that is that it didn't happen much sooner--Hardy went
EOL in 2011. Remove that entry from your /etc/apt/sources.list and the error
message will go away.

It's also not a Wine issue; that repository did not belong to WineHQ.
