[Bug 19270] New: Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Standard freezes after selecting alsa in winecfg
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19270 Summary: Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Standard freezes after selecting alsa in winecfg Product: Wine Version: 1.1.25 Platform: PC URL: http://nuance.com OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: susancragin(a)earthlink.net Direction to reproduce: winecfg - set mixer to alsa start program DNS 10 has a training module near the beginning that analyzes first the loudness of the input and then the quality. This module runs for just long enough to analyze loudness (which it does well) and then it freezes during the quality assessment. I believe that this is not a regression, even though alsa used to work a few months ago. Workaround: in winecfg, set mixer to OSS. The sound quality isn't as good, but it works. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

In fact, it is the only setting that works consistently for me. Fedora 12 disables OSS in /etc/modprobe.d/dist-oss.conf. It can of course be re-enabled but then desktop sounds don't work and you can do things like listen to videos while recording, owing to the way pcm-oss and snd-seq-oss modules take exclusive control of the sound card. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19270 --- Comment #4 from Susan Cragin <susancragin(a)earthlink.net> 2009-10-07 06:29:22 --- I am interested in this. Does Fedora 12 use pulseaudio? Is esound installed by default? Ubuntu used to work very well with alsa before pulseaudio was introduced. Now, winecfg shows that alsa doesn't have a mixer. To get a mixer, I install esound (which means I have to uninstall both pulse and ubuntu-desktop, which screws up my updates). If esound is loaded, winecfg shows an alsa mixer. And DNS recognizes it. But the sound does not work, somehow. I'd love to get alsa working again. The sound for DNS purposes was so much better. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

The program freezes after I set the volume and while I am calibrating the accuracy. So, ALSA has always worked for a bit, and then froze. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19270 --- Comment #12 from Susan Cragin <susancragin(a)earthlink.net> 2009-10-12 07:33:32 --- Yes! It appears to. The panel that tests loudness, and then the one that tests sound quality, both worked without hanging up, and put me right into the general speech training (where I have to recite a long article). When finishing the sound quality training, the following error appears. An error occurred while stopping your sound output. There may be a problem with your system. However, that error does not seem to affect the program. I will have to defer a complete analysis for a couple of days because I can't finish the sound training or really use the program, due to a headcold and cough. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
