[Bug 14770] New: No textures on some video card/computer combinations [Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic]
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14770 Summary: No textures on some video card/computer combinations [Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic] Product: Wine Version: 1.0.0 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: winehq(a)gringer.dis.org.nz Created an attachment (id=15289) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=15289) Screenshot from Chris on wine 1.0.0 On some systems, the starting screen (and, for what it's worth, in-game screens) doesn't have any textures / colours on the models. A screenshot (provided by Chris in the KOTOR discussion pages on appdb) is attached that demonstrates this. This issue is present on systems with the following specifications: * Pentium III with an Nvidia Riva TNT2 M64 card * ~1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, and an Intel 945G (GMA) This issue is *not* present on systems with the following specifications: * HP with integrated graphics * ~1.6GHz Pentium 4, 256MB RAM, Nvidia FX5600 This was observed by me previously, but I put it down to my use of a computer that wasn't good enough to be able to run 3D games under wine. Recent comments in the discussion for this program have indicated that this is also an issue on more recent systems that should be able to run the program properly. As seen in the discussion for SW:KOTOR: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=2712#Comment-38... http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=2712#Comment-38... http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=4124#Comment-38... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

My system is a AMD Sempron 2000+ with an ATI RV280 (Radeon 9800) adapter. I've been using game version 1.03 and wine-1.1.4. I'm using the free radeon module, as the commercial drivers don't work with this specific card yet. I thought it might be related to the video ram size not being detected correctly, but I think I fixed this X-server issue and there should be plenty of video ram available now (128 MB). I also tried running the game in a guaranteed-3d-free-fvwm2 with no improvement. judging from "swkotor-troubleshooting.rtf", the game never ran well with ATI cards, although I got it running on the same system under windows 2000 and fairly old catalyst drivers with no problems at all. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I have an Intel p4 1.8Ghz, with a Radeon 9250, using the free module. I've had this problem with both 1.0 and 1.03 on ubuntu hardy, wine 0.95/0.96 and ubuntu intrepid, wine 1.1.7 I also have this problem with Kotor 2: Sith Lords. (I believe they use the same game engine). Apart form the texture problem, and the mouse issue it runs quite well for me, though I haven't played far into it. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I get this with an ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO], with open source 3D drivers. Thinking through what I've seen of braid screenshots with similar black/white colours on startup, could this be due to cards not supporting shader model 2? I know this is the case for many Intel integrated cards. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

It seems the free intel and ati drivers do not support hardware S3 texture compression (S3TC) but there is a software fallback. Simply use the tool driconf to force S3TC to be enabled and the game will have textures. Sounds like this is the issue, which makes the bug report invalid due to lack of driver support/system configuration issue.
