[Bug 14186] New: Morrowind stucks for 3-5seconds during background music change (in combat)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14186 Summary: Morrowind stucks for 3-5seconds during background music change (in combat) Product: Wine Version: 0.9.59. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: quartz AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: vit.hrachovy(a)sandbox.cz Created an attachment (id=14454) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=14454) Morrowind wine debug log Since 0.9.59 to the recent 1.1.0, Morrowind there was introduced a quartz regression that causes Morrowind to become non-responsive for 3-5 seconds when background music changes (i.e. when combat starts or stops). There is now always a 1-3 second freeze when combat starts or stops, which pretty much makes combat very annoying. I thought it might have to do with the starting/stopping of Battle music, so I went into the Data Files/Music directory and moved the Battle directory out of the way, which seems to help a little but it doesn't really fully fix the problem. I noticed it when I recently upgraded Ubuntu from Gutsy to Hardy, and Wine from 0.9.59 to 1.0-rc5. But the problem still happens for me in version 1.1. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

It seems sufficient to just move away both Battle and Explore directories for me. I thought I'd tried that before, but I was probably just confused, as usual. That makes sense as I guess music is most commonly switching between battle and explore for most of the game. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

(as I said, playing without music or constant freezes at enemies is NOT an option) Long Version: After my 17" display broke, i tried using a 15" crt monitor with Ubuntu 8.04. Unfortunatly there were strange lines over the whole screen, so i had to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10. (8.04 won't accept manual nvidia driver upgrade) Copying Morrowind files and registry isn't enough, so i had to reinstall it. Loading my saves worked well, but the freeze bug was back. -> Quit game and set wine to native quartz.dll. Now i could not get into the menu, Morrowind quits with this error message: Could not load filter graph I tried replacing quartz.dll with a generic one from the net. Could load savegame and freezing bug was gone but i had strange sound issues and after a few minutes Morrowind crashed anyway. I tried other wine versions with no success: (What was done everytime: purge wine and delete .wine; reinstall wine and run wincfg, set drives to auto, deactivate pixel shader and set quartz.dll to native; install morrowind, tribunal, bloodmoon, the latest patch, and no-cd crack) 1.1.10 Unreadalbe Error message inside Morrowind at inital loading 1.1.12 Could not Load Install Shield 1.1.14 wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000018 at address 0x6eb3c9 (thread 0009) 1.1.15 wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000018 at address 0x6eb3c9 (thread 0009) 1.1.16 Could not load filter graph (error message after initalizing data) 1.1.17 Could not load filter graph (error message after initalizing data) My guess is that somehow the audio handling in ubuntu 8.10 is messed up. In 8.04 only 1 programm was allowed to play sounds, in 8.10 multiple programms can use audio. As soon i get a new monitor i will try Morrowind in 8.04 again to assure that the bug isn't in wine. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Hi Christian, try disabling pulseaudio in Ubuntu. I play Morrowind under Ubuntu 8.10 with no problems (except the 1-2 sec freezes on music change and occasional game crash cca once a week). That said, pulseaudio (and compiz) technologies are really pain when playing Wine games. Switch them off. Using the native quartz.dll produces Sound glitches and let the game crash after a while.
Yeah, I get this as well, but it does stop the pausing.I tried quartz.dll version from windows xp, windows 7 and a few random download versions. The versions from native installations both had pops and clicks, the downloaded versions either crashed the game completely, or music didn't work at all. Are the people that have music working correctly using a specific version of the quartz.dll? This is with Oblivion, BTW, I haven't tested with Morrowind. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
