Tried going back to Wine 1.2-rc1 when I'm pretty sure it worked but the result is the same. Same when booting into Linux directly and when running a VM. Tried going back to Wine 1.2-rc1 when I'm pretty sure it worked but the result is the same.
Maybe you should go back further. The symptoms sound like bug 23442, which was eventually closed as a duplicate of bug 17273. That bug only affects Firefox 3.6.6 and later, and would explain why you thought it used to work in older Wine.
