I had exactly the same problem on the lowest settings. However for me it was solves by deleting Variables.txt found in /home/user/Starcraft II/. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23906 --- Comment #23 from Erich Hoover <ehoover(a)mines.edu> 2011-01-26 23:55:20 CST --- Created an attachment (id=33002) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=33002) Minimalist hack around fog problem I took a look at commit 4936e71828669ef084f9cf243f924a11a2cdce50 and stepped through the changes to find the one piece that causes the fog problem in SC2. A hack to revert the relevant piece is attached here. I'm not really familiar with GLSL, but if I had to guess (from my knowledge of floating point numbers) I'd say that it's probably a signedness problem. The old code always assumed that any division by zero should result in an infinity-equivalent; however, with IEEE floating point numbers a division by minus zero returns a minus infinity. So, if in the new code we end up dividing by a minus zero then we would get the "wrong" infinity. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Did you guys make sure you chose to save the colony? I made a save at the beginning of this map and just re-tested that it still doesn't work (Wine 1.3.15). After looking at the OpenGL documentation a little, it looks like the older versions of the spec do not require that floating point number calculations follow IEEE 754. So, I'd say it's likely that different cards will handle this reciprocal operation differently.

Indeed I did. In Safe Haven I got the same everything-grey-except-the-glowing-effects seen in the screenshot. Haven's Fall was fine. SC2 in 1GB of RAM was swapping so much it was virtually unplayable, so I got more RAM. I didn't see a downside to trying Safe Haven one more time. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23906 --- Comment #30 from Henri Verbeet <hverbeet(a)gmail.com> 2011-06-04 15:01:42 CDT --- For what it's worth, we think we have a reasonable idea of what the problem is, but it probably won't be so easy to fix. Erich is close wrt IEEE floating point rules. Current nvidia OpenGL Linux drivers follow IEEE floating point rules, in that e.g. 0.0 * INF results in NaN. The D3D drivers don't, and 0.0 * INF gets you 0.0. As far as I'm aware there's no way to explicitly request either behaviour in current versions of GLSL, so it this probably require a GL extension to fix. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23906 --- Comment #32 from machete <aeneas(a)q-mail.me> 2011-06-15 09:35:28 CDT --- And, in addition [[bugzilla:26967]] should be related to this one. Patch db8d681a5b088b3b0dd58c6952086891f6bbb4f5 broke water shaders if shaders are set above low. I opened 2 Bugreports for Nvidia ( http://nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2445516 ) as well as ATI ( http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=160 ) unfortunately I am not a pro at all when it comes to graphical issues but I tried my best ;) So if any of the wine developers who actually know what the issue is exactly and how the driver vendors could fix it (e.g. by providing an extension with witch the d3d floating point behaviour could be defined) may post there and help fixing the issue. Btw it seems as if it got fixed in dx3d 10 as mentioned here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc308050%28v=vs.85%29.aspx "Honored IEEE-754 Rules Some of these rules are a single option where IEEE-754 offers choices. Divide by 0 produces +/- INF, except 0/0 which results in NaN. log of (+/-) 0 produces -INF. log of a negative value (other than -0) produces NaN. Reciprocal square root (rsq) or square root (sqrt) of a negative number produces NaN. The exception is -0; sqrt(-0) produces -0, and rsq(-0) produces -INF. INF - INF = NaN (+/-)INF / (+/-)INF = NaN (+/-)INF * 0 = NaN NaN (any OP) any-value = NaN The comparisons EQ, GT, GE, LT, and LE, when either or both operands is NaN returns FALSE. Comparisons ignore the sign of 0 (so +0 equals -0). The comparison NE, when either or both operands is NaN returns TRUE. Comparisons of any non-NaN value against +/- INF return the correct result. Created attachment 33002 [details] Minimalist hack around fog problem
I took a look at commit 4936e71828669ef084f9cf243f924a11a2cdce50 and stepped through the changes to find the one piece that causes the fog problem in SC2. A hack to revert the relevant piece is attached here.
Erich's patch seems to have fixed the problem for me. Forest, I'd like to confirm that your custom version of wine worked great. I also took the diff and source from your ppa and compiled my own wine so I could use a custom refresh rate, and that worked too. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

This problem vanished for me today when I updated to nvidia driver 295.20 Using wine-1.4-rc3
My new computer was never affected by the issue and my old one is toast, but it does not surprise me that this was a result of a driver bug.
