I don't think so - I'm using an Nvidia card here:

Geforce 7900 GTX w/ 512 MB memory, using the Nvidia 1.0-9755 drivers.

Still happening in the latest git by the way, which has a few changes to gdi32
(sorry if they're obviously not useful, I don't know)
