if you play Company of Heroes the game will sooner or later crash with a video
memory problem

a simple way to reproduce is:
start CoH with WINEDEBUG="fps"
esc out of the videos to the main menu
start tutorial
wait for the loading screen to finish (button press any key appears)
wait 30 seconds and watch fps numbers (starting at 3700 fps here)
when fps drop drasticly (to about 160 for me)
click the press any key button

crash

Team Fortress 2 menu display is also suffering from this virtual size hitting
the 4GB limit issue (causing freezing for short moments, server not connecting,
crashing the the game)

the "fix" helps a bit as it reduces the starting virt size from 3.8 to 3gb but
it doesn't fix the leak

but staying in the menu showed that tf2 starts out with around 130mb res usage
and starts climbing as well as the virt size

it takes a while to reach the 4gb now but you still reach it

I also tested wine-0.9.52 and was able to get the same results :(

then I checked ubuntu 8.04 32bit and it looked stable

an ubuntu 64bit test only produced seg faults after launching TF2 so testing
wasn't possible :(

this issue seems to be limited to the 173.* nvidia drivers (x86_64)

after upgrading to the x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-177.13 this problem
disappeared
