I dug out my CD and tried this again - no luck, I'm afraid Clean install of Pharaoh (& Cleopatra expansion) results in the attached console output. The game does the above if you don't start it from it's own directory, but it works fine (sound and all) if you start it from .wine/drive_c/SIERRA/Pharaoh (or wherever the executable is, I presume)
Yes, that's very important. Many applications will fail otherwise, as you found out :). Note that the game also needs win9x for sound to work, but it seems you figured that out.
