[Bug 18228] New: Error when installing adobe photoshop.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18228 Summary: Error when installing adobe photoshop. Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: msi AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: nicklas(a)ws.se Created an attachment (id=20738) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=20738) Dump of Adobe CS4 installation attempt. This is with wine version 1.1.20. It happens while installing Photoshop CS4, and i am not really sure which errors halts the application installation or if it even uses MSI(which is the component I choose for the registration). To describe, the installation starts, a progress bar almost finishes and then the error message occurs. In this dump, I pressed the "X" to close the window. I suspect this is the same problem others are getting(http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=14318). I am not sure by any means, but it seems as is this might be a regression, since some appear to have succeeded with installing earlier(http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=14318&iTestingI...). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

What error message?
That would be this, the least helpful one possible: "Setup has encountered an error and cannot continue. Contact Adobe Photoshop Support for assistance." However, i do feel "normal" severity bugs tend to not be fixed very soon i think that making Photoshop work should be one of the largest priorities of the wine project. Currently it doesn't seem like it, though. I just don't get it. Me, I would do a test install and regression test of CS 2-3-4 and Illustrator before each wine-release. Irrelevant? Oh, please don't be civil about it. Be just a little bit more inflammatory.

Send patches? Well I would like to think of my self as a quite experienced developer and would probably have done so some day if my first contact with community members wouldn't have been such a negative experience. If you think this program is some how more important then

Yeah, well, uh, maybe it is just me, but I happen to think that PS, one of the worlds most used business applications, is a little bit more important than the age-old crap that this project prides itself with on it's platinum list. This is actually the first time in ANY of the open source projects I have either managed or participated in, that anyone has told med to keep my opinions to myself. I have been told to voice them elsewhere, which maybe I should have, but never to keep them to myself. While Photoshop, et al are important, it's a lot of work to get working. It still isn't however, a lot of applications.

Wine strives to get _all_ applications to work. Many of those 'age-old crap' applications are old proprietary business applications that are vital for others. Everyone has a different killer app. We can't fix them all at once, so some people luck out if their application gets supported first.

I will, if I get the time. It takes some time to learn the enviroments...and get my head around GIT, of course.. :-)
While Photoshop, et al are important, it's a lot of work to get working.
Maybe I am wrong, but to me it doesn't seem as it is. Moved installations have reached gold status and installations has been known to succeed.
It still isn't however, a lot of applications.
Rigid bug classification systems are great to an extent, i'll leave it at that.. :-)

Yeah, I know that, but it's just so horribly frustrating to see wine fail this objective which is so crucial for a broad Linux adoption, year after year. I think that wine would attract far more contributors, thus reach it's "all-goal" far earlier if it had some of the more prestigious applications working. Maybe not 10 years ago, but now, for sure, is the time to focus for just a little while, IMHO.

The installer is a pretty tough nut to crack. Adobe is known for using the Win32 API for lots of corner cases and other uncommon things, which means lots of other stuff works fine, but not their stuff. And fixing that stuff doesn't help many other (non-Adobe) programs. Rest assured, Adobe products _are_ a priority. Just not the _only_ priority. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Yep. Or, it certainly looks like that to me, anyway. Before 1.1.18, the installation works. In version 1.1.18 or later, it doesn't. Well. If it isn't a regression, then it would mean that Photoshop installs isn't supposed to work, a somewhat unlikely goal for wine. :-) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18228 --- Comment #35 from Anastasius Focht <focht(a)gmx.net> 2009-05-14 07:47:44 --- Hello, there is no need to discuss this further. The problem and possible solution has already been described in bug 18070 Even if it looks like a regression to you, Wine's previous approach was wrong. Looking back in Wine history, it started with bug 8945 where I drew incorrect conclusion which introduced the default creation of COM apartment in MSI CAs. It helped Adobe CS3/4 at that time but it was technically incorrect. Currently, the issue of MSI custom actions and MTAs is only partly fixed - hence it still fails. Though don't know if someone is working on it... Ok, since you now seem more confident than earlier(comment #26), I will mark this as a duplicate and link 18070 to Photoshop if it isn't done already.
