On Windows XP and lower, it just yells about CPSE: Stream open file failed. (Unknown HRESULT) This also happens on Steam version with Proton. Tried virtual desktop and new 32bit prefix, same error. Maybe it's just game engine being poorly written for newer systems. At first, you should fix your setup. For me, the game crashes but the error is pretty clear.
