I think it might be part of certain Office 2003 packages however (I got mine through the MSDNAA, so I can't tell you which ones). As for crash output, do you mean something other than the console output I attached? I'm not seeing this reproduced with 1.0rc4 with GDIplus from WineTricks.
Otherwise Visio hangs at splash screen.
With GDIPlus it does work fine for most types of file - however UML diagrams (creation or edition) crash it. (I can't seem to install the service pack.) I installed wine today for the first time from the Debian Lenny package. And once you apply the patch posted there visio 2003 runs well.
