[Bug 23607] New: High CPU usage with idle NewsLeecher
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23607 Summary: High CPU usage with idle NewsLeecher Product: Wine Version: 1.0-rc5 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: patrick_stokman(a)hotmail.com Since the last two, maybe three RCs, NewsLeecher uses a lot of CPU when it starts and sits idle. No matter what you do, it keeps using one core completely. This wasn't the case with rc1 and rc2 for sure (and before). Sending NL to tray reduces CPU to a better level, but still above normal. Average use on my 2.8 GHz AMD dual core: Tray: ~20% Normal: ~40%-80%, changing every second or so (up/down) Due to this 'abuse', the GUI updates are very slowly, repaints are clearly visible and scrolling is very slow because of that. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23607 --- Comment #3 from patrick_stokman(a)hotmail.com 2010-07-12 13:32:16 --- @Austin English, Is that really needed? It's takes quite a lot of time and additional packages I rather not have. I know it will save you guys time. I've found some new information that should make this step unneeded, please see below. @Vitaliy Margolen, Currently it's the latest Ubuntu build from the Wine PPA, 1.2~rc7-0ubuntu2. More information: I noticed with the package update from build 0ubuntu1 to 0ubuntu2 that the CPU usage by NewsLeecher itself went down considerably. The only two processes that were eating up my CPU were Compiz and X (/usr/bin/X vt7 -nolisten tcp). I just ran NL with Compiz on and the responsiveness was better than with the previous build. I turned off Compiz and ran NL again: speed was normal again. It seems that Wine applications don't always play nice with Compiz. Since NewsLeecher is the only program I use with Wine, I wasn't able to confirm the same behaviour in other applications. Additional information about my environment: Xubuntu 10.04 x64, installed with only the most minimum of packages. Compiz-fusion installed and set as default WM. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23607 --- Comment #4 from Austin English <austinenglish(a)gmail.com> 2010-07-12 13:56:09 --- The past two ubuntu releases (not included build2) had pgo enabled, which broke sound and possibly other things. This sounds invalid, it's probably due to either pgo or compiz. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23607 --- Comment #5 from patrick_stokman(a)hotmail.com 2010-07-12 14:37:45 --- You mean the initial build of rc7 and rc6 had pgo enabled? What about rc5? When I created this bug report, I wasn't able to select a newer version than rc5. I didn't keep track of which version I was on when the CPU went overboard, so it's quite possible that it's only pgo causing the issue. I doubt it's Compiz, because I didn't have any issues with it before, but I am willing to accept that it did help causing more issues than you would normally get. I will keep an eye on this. For now, it seems that this report is indeed invalid due to the pgo problems. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I'm not sure if rc5 had it, I know 6 and 7 did. Marking invalid. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
