[Bug 15162] New: Regression: Team Fortress 2 unstable in Wine 1.1.4 (random 3d related crashes)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15162 Summary: Regression: Team Fortress 2 unstable in Wine 1.1.4 (random 3d related crashes) Product: Wine Version: 1.1.4 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: aoanla(a)yahoo.com In Ubuntu 8.04, AMD64 version, Team Fortress 2 is unstable in Wine 1.1.4 (reverting to 1.1.3 fixes this issue). Crashes are semi-random, but include: Semi-regular crashes on resolution change or other events restarting the render backend. Semi-regular crashes on Alt-Tab to and then from desktop - this also seems to crash X with a segfault Xorg[6069]: segfault at 8 rip 7feceb912cab rsp 7ffff837cdb0 error 4 If neither of those happens, invariably TF2 crashes (after around 15 minutes of play) with some access violation in opengl libraries, freezing the screen and requiring the user to switch to a virtual terminal and use wineserver -k to kill the process and regain use of their X session. I'll get some logs and attach them in a bit. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

This doesn't contain needed details: what card, driver, what non-default Wine d3d-related settings and overrides (if any).
nVidia 8800GT, 177.13 beta driver, no non-default Wine settings and overrides (but TF2 running with -dxlevel 81 as needed to actually play the thing at all). This does not appear to be an nVidia related bug, as someone has suggested to me that they have a similar issue with an ATI card. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I did think it looked a little unrelated. The difficulty is that sometimes the crash happens just on resolution change - in which case, the badness of that branch is obvious. In others, it can take a long time for the crash to happen... (so, I suspect that it's my good, rather than bad regressions which are wrong). I'll have another look at it. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Do you use Alsa sound driver? Because OSS is buggy. Do you have Compiz enabled? Do you allow window manager to control the windows? What kind of corruption happens when you change settings? http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15162 --- Comment #20 from Sam skipsey <aoanla(a)yahoo.com> 2008-10-18 10:23:46 --- I've always used the ALSA sound driver, and I dislike Compiz so I always turn it off totally. I do allow the window manager to control the windows - as I recall, I was having problems with keyboard focus until I turned that on, ages ago. The corruption consists of a kind of green-and-blue checkerboard effect in the background, sometimes with the Graphics Settings window in TF2 displayed on top of it. In addition, I managed to crash X just now by trying wine-1.1.6-255-g9898d43 with -dxlevel 95 (it seemed to be working - screen resolution change was successful - but alt-tabbing out of TF2 and back again resulted in an X crash. Since I never have keyboard focus (this has always been a problem with TF2 in wine for me, back as far as I've played it) in TF2 until I alt-tab out and in again, this is sort of a problem.). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

(it seems you have to activate that commit somehow, but I can't help you with it). I experienced lack of keyboard focus, but only when I disabled window manager control. BTW alt-tabbing of TF2 is buggy even on Windows - it often results in black and pink checkerbox instead of reflections, invisible models of players and so on. So I don't know if we can blame Wine here. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

That sounds like multicore rendering is on. Turn it off, it causes a lot of graphical glitches for me (for example, all I see is the shadow rendering, and it shows up as green triangles on a grey background). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Alt-tabbing is known to still kill the game but it is a totally separate issue to the one being talked about here and probably requires its own bug. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I can't kill the application, I have to do a hard reset. My video card is Radeon HD4770, running under Kubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Unfortunately, I can't do a regression test because wine versions 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 don't compile in my PC. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

As far as I can tell a proper regression test was never done, both Wine and TF2 have changed significantly since this was originally filed, and I have some doubts that the crashes people are still seeing are even the same bug. If you can reproduce this with 1.4-rc3 or later, please attach a proper backtrace (without steam breakpad etc.) and relevant hardware and software configuration. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I think it happened more frequently then pressing TAB to see player score. Turning off anisotropic filtering in game settings and in Nvidia drivers settings fixed the bug completely. I haven't had a single crash since then, even if playing for many hours straight. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
