[Bug 28066] New: Sound stops after some time (restarting sound in game usually possible)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28066 Summary: Sound stops after some time (restarting sound in game usually possible) Product: Wine Version: 1.3.26 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: pitlicek(a)gmail.com In many games (SC2, Source engine games, Oblivion), the sound stops working after while (completely random, sometimes couple of minutes, sometimes above hour). It is usually possible to restart the sound in game (going to options menu in SC2, snd_restart in source engine console, starting new game in Oblivion) but it's pretty annoying, if you have to do it every couple of minutes. I started observing this bug long time ago (probably about a year ago, nut sure), so it's not result of current sound engine rewrite (and it doesn't fixed this). Currently using Ubuntu 10.04 64bit, PulseAudio. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

From what I understand 11.04 and below has a bug in the alsa-plugins/pulse implementation. It's supposedly fixed in 11.10. I'm still on 10.10 cause I refuse at this point to go to Unity. (If unity gave me 2 bars (ie Gnome 2), let me get rid of that launcher thing, had indicators for wicd/steam/other things that don't show in Unity's bar for me, i'd upgrade).
Um I can't find the launchpad bug report, but I've been all over this because of me refusing to upgrade, wine-pulse patches no longer working in 1.3.25+, and the bug in alsa-plugins (alsa plugin to pulse) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Running Oblivion (patched with official patches up to 1.2). Wine 1.3.28 NVidia card (GeForce something or other... 512MB of VRAM) An obscene amount of system RAM and a current AMD processor. I looked in the output while running, I don't see any obvious culprits. The sound worked fine during the intro (prison run), though when I stepped away from the computer and game back, the sound cut out when I began the "sewers" portion. Out in the full world, when I first load the game, whether i'm in town or outdoors, the sound works for about 2-5 minutes then cuts out. Dialog seems to be a frequent trigger, though not the only one. Disabling bgMusic in Oblivion.ini has *helped* but not *solved* the problem. Performance seems to be inconsistent. Worked fine when I played it on my laptop (512MB NVidia video card, Core 2 Duo Intel proc) last year. Game plays fine, aside from the sound. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

This is when my sound problem began. When I run WOW Cataclysm, my sound often cuts out from the get go, sometimes last 1 to 10 minutes. Other times half hour or if I'm lucky, an entire duration of a 5man instance. Occasionally, it comes back when i tweak ingame option Sound where I check/uncheck 'Use Hardware'. Recently I started again with the game Dungeon keeper II and I could usually play for an hour or so before the sound broke. With the last update (1.3.35) this changed to only 5 minutes. Also noteworthy: after the last update I can usually play exactly 2 video's in the movies section, after which the sound is broken. Sometimes the sound breaks while playing a movie, but it is always broken after 2 movies. Even more annoying is the fact that with broken sound, trying to play a movie breaks the whole game. My only option is to kill wineserver. I did not test this before 1.3.35, so I cannot say how it was then. Another game that is affected is GTA:SA, here I could play for quite a while before the sound broke, but now usually it already breaks in the menus... Here the cut scenes do not work anymore, so I cannot finish missions. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28066 --- Comment #19 from Rob <rob.verduijn(a)gmail.com> 2011-12-30 07:08:35 CST --- removing pulse audio becomes a bigger pain with every new release of any distro that is using it. It is getting more tightly integrated into most popular distros with every release. On suse I've already had a native linux app (mumble) crashing on me when I turned off pulse audio (yes i did configure it again for alsa in stead of pulse). This is very annoying since now i have to choose between playing eve with sound and no mumble and eve with no sound and being able to communicate with my fleet/corp during opps. So I personally consider simply de-installing/disabling pulse a solution with a lot of negative side effects which I prefer to avoid. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Getting the sound to work in the first place was a challenge, but installing DirectX 10 and alternating between Windows XP and Windows 7 emulation modes seemed to help. (That is: I'd set it for Win XP emu mode, load the game, and if sound didn't work, I'd quit and re-load with Win 7 emu selected. Neither one nor the other consistently performed better, so I'm not sure what's at play there) I have not tested Oblivion since installing DirectX 10 (installed via the redist on the Skyrim disc), but will do that. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28066 --- Comment #31 from Thomas Strasser <saufnix(a)gmx.at> 2012-02-01 09:45:15 CST --- I didn't find the OSS-Solution in this Bug-View, so I thought it might be useful for some people who wants a quick & maybe dirty solution. By the way I have no pulseaudio installed and get the same problem. So it seems to be some problem of alsa or the alsa-wine-part and not of pulseaudio. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

This weekend I'll test for a longer time to see if all problems are gone. The sounds are not garbled anymore, but they still might break after an hour or more. I haven't tested that. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
