[Bug 9252] New: Far Cry: Segmentation fault on startup when using Direct3D
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9252 Summary: Far Cry: Segmentation fault on startup when using Direct3D Product: Wine Version: 0.9.42. Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: wine-directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: spencercw(a)googlemail.com Created an attachment (id=7509) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=7509) Terminal output Wine version: 0.9.43 Distro: Gentoo Linux 2007.0 GCC version: gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2) Program: Far Cry No-cd patch applied. By default Far Cry uses Direct3D9, this causes a segmentation fault upon starting the game. As a work around, `r_Driver = "Direct3D9"` can be changed to `r_Driver = "OpenGL"` in Program Files/Ubisoft/Crytek/Far Cry/system.cfg, though it would of course be better if it worked out of the box. I am attaching the terminal output (30kB->2.0kB bz2), the output with WINEDEBUG=+relay (920MB->519kB), and the output with WINEDEBUG=+d3d (40kB->2.6kB). Note that this issue isn't present in the demo version. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

In general I haven't gotten any segfaults, both on playing through the whole game version 1.0 on opengl, and on a steam install of far cry 1.4 switching back and forth between both modes and taking screenshots. I used to get it back in the day on certain level tranisitions, in either mode, on version 1.3, maybe 1.4. I couldn't get past this one level because it would crash. I've always assumed this was a bug related to savegames/level loading/etc. I would maybe try a reinstall of the game in a new wineprefix. Maybe I can reproduce it again and run some traces. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9252 --- Comment #31 from byteframe <byteframe(a)yahoo.com> 2009-07-26 01:20:21 --- I was finally able to reproduce the bug, I think. I set my VideoMemortSize to 64, and when I loaded a large farcry level, and set r_hdrrendering 1 in the console, I got it to crash. I got the same error dialog box as the previous screenshot submitted by mcpaul. It's seemingly an out of memory issue. If true, then I think bug 13165 is a dupe of this one. Also, The "on startup" in the bug description is misleading. I grepped a verbose (+d3d) log when reproducing the crash for "GetAvailableTextureMem", and it seems my 320 MB 8800GTS was being accurately questimated : trace:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_GetAvailableTextureMem (0x15a6e8) : simulating 320MB, returning 291MB left. I should also note that a previous session of testing and screenshot collecting (going back and forth between opengl and d3d, and starting the game many times over), after I while I couldn't even start the game. I got a GLXBadDrawable Error, even after killing wine. I was seemingly out of memory, and had to restart X. So it seems, FarCry might leak a fair amount of memory, or it might be related this being spit out a few hundred times upon quitting the game normally: fixme:d3d:dumpResources Leftover resource 0x329a4a0 with type 3,WINED3DRTYPE_TEXTURE, Debug attachment of crash to follow. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Doesn't look like it to me. The attachment you have provided shows the out of adapter memory error. See my earlier attachment and backtrace, that is the crash which was occuring. Also it looks like you're using the steam version, try using the demo which is linked in the URL field, no change to configuration is necessary. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Interestingly, we both seem to fail on the call to CreateSurface. At any rate, could you please attach a debug log of the crash in recent wine? For you, does it happen on level load, or starting the game itself?
Also it looks like you're using the steam version, try using the demo which is linked in the URL field, no change to configuration is necessary.
The fact that it's from steam shouldn't affect make a differance, at least in regards to comparisons with versions > 1.33. Regardless, it seemed like a good idea to try the demo, and it seemed to crashed for me everytime on level load. However I revereted back from latest git to 1.1.26, and it doesn't crash. It is odd that the full version works in in both sets of code. Since (for me) counter strike source is broken under current git, I should think this bug will be fixed before 1.1.27. That being said, I've never had any farcry version crash on _startup_. Danila Sentiabov is probably right about this being seperate issues. The out of memory thing might therefore be beside the point, as it turns out the VideoMemorySize is now automatic. I'll continue playing through the game, if I can get a reproducable d3d-related crash, I'll try to be of more help. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

You're not the only one. I'm experiencing this, too. At a first glance I thought it was Direct3D related. But depending on kernel upgrades and/or wine upgrades it also refused to start in OpenGL mode. So this seems to be pretty random. But what I can watch is that independent of Direct3D/OpenGL it starts on about 1 of 100 tries to start it without segfault/segill. It seems to be a timing issue and thus hard to debug.
We are probably talking about 3 different issues [...]
At least it seems a little different than the OR. It is probably hard to clearly distinguish the different bugs. But as far as I see this the OR was about startup crashes - not in-game crashes. So we should stuck to the start-up crashes here. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I disagree. I took startup to mean the game starting the game from the menu, which is the crash I originally confirmed over a year ago, because changing to opengl as per the original report works around the d3d crash on level loading. Which is different from what Austin later posted to say that both modes segfault immediately. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Please read carefully before commenting. I already wrote that the problem was present with nvidia hardware which has nothing to do with Catalyst.
