After all the fixes for bug 19352, the next problem seems to be MSXML and can be workarounded with winetricks msxml3.
This bugreport lacks a version number of the version of messenger that is to be installed. Windows Live Messenger 9 can be installed by 'winetricks msxml3 ie6' Windows Live Messenger 8.5 runs, after winetricks msxml3 into a com+ issue apparently. Hi Nikolay, applying those patches fixes the msxml problem for me.
