[Bug 13906] New: crashes on startup, before rendering scene
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13906 Summary: crashes on startup, before rendering scene Product: Wine Version: 1.0-rc4 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: bob(a)dest-unreach.be Created an attachment (id=14008) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=14008) console error output The issue was there in rc4, it got worse in rc5. rc4 scenario: Startup Guild Wars, main menu works (=> rendering works!). Log in, still fine. Select character, enter game. Loading screen appears. Environmental sounds are audible at the end of the loading stage, as usual. When the loading screen should disappear and get replaced by the game scene, it crashes. rc5 scenario: Startup Guild Wars, crash. About the same error output. Config: Kubuntu 8.04 Radeon 7500, open source radeon driver DRI enabled, works. (Warcraft III runs flawslessly under wine, openGL though) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Forgot to mention that Guild Wars used to work with this config + older versions of wine. Ok. I will first try to figure out where it more or less went wrong by using older deb packages, or is that a bad idea? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

A regression test will require using git, not binary packages. It may save you a bit of time versus compiling, so honestly it's up to you (basically bandwith vs cpu time for initial testing, until the smallest release difference is found). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Whichever version I try, it won't run anymore. Reinstall doesn't help. Really old versions don't crash it though, it just hangs without any rendering. I'm sure it keeps running because I monitored network activity, and it keeps downloading tons of stuff from the GW network. (check wine.41 in the tar archive) If I can find some time I will try to download the whole GW image, so the program has all the files it needs. Maybe version .41 won't hang anymore if it doesn't have to download stuff. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

The fixme:dbghelp:SymInitializeW what to do ?? issue could be a dupe of bug #12646.
Don't think so (although I'm not into wine), because the 'what to do' does not appear anymore when I use a recent wine version. Additionally, I never get to see a rendered scene and always get the crash at the same time, which is a difference from bug #12646. Finally, he doesn't mention 'fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_CreateTexture Failed to create surface 0x83275260' Please let me know if there's something that I should try, I'd like to be able to agree on the Platinum rating that Guild Wars currently has :) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I think I got one step further. I just tested UnrealTournament, and set its rendering mode to D3D. => Crash. Works fine in software rendering and OpenGL. Again, something similar to failed to create surface: err:ddraw:IDirectDrawImpl_CreateNewSurface IWineD3DDevice::CreateSurface failed. hr = 8876017c Please help me getting D3D back to work, it used to work and I can't figure out what's wrong. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Two steps further now, removing ~/.wine repaired UT in D3D, but only for wine 9.60 and lower. I'll start regression on this when I've finished my exams and really have some time. Hints are still welcome. Is this still an issue in current (1.1.11 or newer) wine?
Guild Wars seems to run fine since I upgraded to Kubuntu 8.10. I don't know if it's the new wine or the new environment that fixed my issue. I could investigate it, but you can close this for now.
