From what I can gather, the problem is with the font rendering, and the more text on the screen, the more the game lags. I've also noticed this also happens in at least one other app (SimCopter). Some people on the Soldat forums have suggested changing the fonts used, which you can do by manually editing <Soldat installation folder>/Txt/font.ini and the Font1 and Font2 fields to a bitmap font instead of a truetype or xft font. It does spit out a few of - err:d3d_surface:surface_prepare_system_memory Surface without memory or pbo has SFLAG_INSYSMEM set! but that's about it.
