[Bug 10707] New: Wine freezes X
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10707 Summary: Wine freezes X Product: Wine Version: 20050930 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: critical Priority: P3 Component: wine-binary AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: His__Child(a)hotmail.com When trying to launch anything from wine (wine, wine notepad, winecfg) the system freezes up. I asked for help, who could connect using ssh (openssh-server) but as soon as i would run any part of wine it would freeze, including ssh. The same goes for if he runs any part of wine. After about 15-20 seconds it will reboot, acting like nothing had happened. However, when running it in console, i noticed wine spitting some stuff about sound cards. I have two sounds card, one on my motherboard, the other on a pci. Both are configured to use OSS. However, when i took my pci sound card out, it would run flawlessly. My system specs: AMD Athlon 3800+ X2 2ghz 2Gb DDR ram Asus A8R-MVP sounds card 1 is onboard on this motherboard second sound card is a trust SC-5200. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

If wine freezes your X server it is an X server bug, not a wine bug...
If it was just X that froze, ssh would've continued to work. However, ssh froze and new connections could not be made. Since this is just the case when wine is run, this is a problem caused from wine. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Invalid. Not Wine bug. Mostlikely bad/improperly installed video drivers. Unless of course you running Wine as root. This nothing we can do there either.
My videodrivers are installed fine. I can use D3D in any application with perfect fps. Also, did you read that removing a soundcard helped and fixed it? Doesn't this give you a hint that it isn't the videodrivers? Why is this NOT a wine problem when it ONLY happens with wine? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Wine is an application that runs in user mode. A user mode application MUST NOT be able to crash your system, even if it deliberately tries to do it. Otherwise, any malware could crash your system. So it is a kernel bug, or a driver bug. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Bleh
NO THIS IS INVALID BUG DO NOT REOPEN!
first off, would you mind not shouting. Also, don't you think triple posting is a bit useless? And it still is caused by wine. If i disable EITHER ONE of my sound cards it runs. with BOTH in, it crashes. Doesn't this give you a HINT that it isn't caused by sound drivers? also, i can just use both sound cards at the same time in any other prog. But fine, be ignorant if you wish. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Why are you trying to reset it to something that is 2+ years old? And again you should be filing bug with your distro/alsa/kernel. Wine is a user space app. If it can "freeze" your PC so any other app could. "Fixing" Wine would be avoiding the actual problem. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

This is how modern operating systems are defined. No matter what evil thing the app does, either maliciously or accidentally, the kernel must protect you from harm. If it does not, the kernel is broken. Get any good book about operating system that discusses topics like security, multi-user systems, resource quotas and similar things. They will all confirm what I said. Even if Wine is the old application on earth that crashes your system: If the system crashes, and you are not running Wine as root, it is a bug in your kernel, not wine. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I'm not using a 2 year old version, i'm running the newest version -,- but i give up. I understand what you're trying to say, but you should know just as well as i do that there are always exceptions to the rule that an app can't crash a system. Anyway, go ahead, delete me, this bug or anything else. If you're unable to read what i'm typing then i can't be arsed to even try to file bug reports. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

You are right, that is not a problem with wine, but one that often occurs. So is there a dialog between wine-developers(knowing there real issue more detailed than most users) and the other projects? http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10707 --- Comment #16 from Austin English <austinenglish(a)gmail.com> 2007-12-07 18:28:06 --- wine is merely exposing the bug, not the source of the bug. The bug could be in X, your drivers, your kernel, ALSA, etc. The best recourse would be to file a bug in your distribution, who are more likely to know the best place to file this issue. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
