[Bug 20866] New: Houaiss Portuguese Dictionary (blocked window)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20866 Summary: Houaiss Portuguese Dictionary (blocked window) Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: mrx(a)riseup.net Hello friends. I appologize for disturbing you, I hope I'm not doing anything wrong by posting this thing here, but, I decided to try. I've been using Debian for about a year, and I've got a bit of a problem with an electronic dictionary which is very dear to me, since I work with texts... It's the Houaiss Portuguese Dictionary, made for Windows. All the other dictionaries I use run perfectly well in Wine, but this one has got some kind of strange bug. Sometimes, when I open it, it appears as a minimized window at the panel below. If you then click on it to maximize it, instead of a full screen window what you get is only a very narrow strip of window. If you click on its right-hand upper corner in order do maximize it, nothing happens. All you can do is close it. Then, if you run the programm again, the same thing will happen, no matter how many times you try. If you uninstall the software and re-install it completely, usually the same thing happens! A friend of mine wrote a script for me which has helped, since with it I usually can make it work again, but it's always a little bit annoying, since it doesn't work immediately, and you have to run the scrip a thousand times before the moody dictionary decides to work. The scrip I've been using to fix the problem runs as follows: #!/bin/sh cp -a ~/.wine_working/* ~/.wine echo "old good wine restored..." I'm no expert al all, as you can see, so if you could help me (and probably other portuguese speakers who use this dictionary) to definetely solve this problem I'd really appreciate! I thank you very much for your attention and help! What Wine version? Please attach (as a text file) complete terminal output of running the program.
Hello there! Thanks a lot for you help! I'm not sure if I know how to get the "complete terminal output of running the program". It's ridiculous, I know! I apologize for being so ignorant about that, but the fact is that I just don't know what you mean exactly, because I'm terrible! I'm always struggling with Gnu/Linux, so that I don't need to get back to Windows, but I confess that I'm not very good with computers... I'm trying to do my best, though. The wine version is: zac(a)debian:~$ wine --version wine-1.0.1-174-gc4039bd Hope this helps! If not, just tell me what I need to do to obtain the information you need and I'll do my best to get it. It's pasted below! Many thanks! About the wine version, I'm so naive that I thought I was using the up-to-date wine version simply because of regularly running apt-get update + apt-get upgrade on the terminal. After reading your comment it seems to me this is not as simple as that, is it? Oh, dear, that's embarrassing! What should I do to get the current development release? Is it just as stable as the one I'm using. I mean... the only problem I get is with this particular software. The rest works just fine. I don't think we want to start considering bugs against 1.0.1 valid, unless verified it's in the latest development release/git HEAD.
Also, the log is rather small in this case, so I'd just as soon let that transgression go. Zac, in the future, we prefer that you attach the logs, especially as large ones get distracting rather quickly.
Agreed. Vitaliy, I'm sorry. My mistake! The first time I posted the bug here I was more attentive to the site's rules. When I posted the log yesterday I was a little bit excited for simply being able to get the log, 'cause as I said I'm not very experienced. So I forgot I shouldn't paste it here, and I didn't see the warning above, even though I had read it the first time I posted the bug. Anyway, I learnt my lesson, and now have a clearer idea about what a log is. I appologize. Thank you for your help. (In reply to comment #7)

I used to run Ubuntu and I changed to Debian because I heard it was more stable, and I do find it more stable. Maybe that's why I still have this 'rather old' wine version that came along with it and I think it doesn't get the newer versions uless you explicitly tell it to do so. I'll try to get the 1.1.33 version then, and if the bug persists I'll post it here. Juan, thank you very much for your attention and help.
Also, the log is rather small in this case, so I'd just as soon let that transgression go. Zac, in the future, we prefer that you attach the logs, especially as large ones get distracting rather quickly.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20866 --- Comment #11 from Zac <mrx(a)riseup.net> 2009-12-03 08:21:25 --- Hi there! I've got the 1.1.33 version. The dictionary still doesn't work, although the nature of the problem seems to have changed. I attached the log-file as requested. Another thing that happened now, though, is that my other dictionary, the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) became a little worse than it was with the 1.0.1 version. It is still working, and I still can use it, but some special characters are not being recognized (like some Greek characters, for instance) and the fonts in general became a little worse than before, they are not quite clear, they look a little distorted, although you can read them. I'd really like to have them as clear as before with this new version, but I don't know how I could fix that? Any suggestions? Thank you very much! Well, ok. Sorry for that! One bug at a time. When you run the software now, the window opens fine. It seems perfect. But if you try to maximize it, although it does maximize, it immediately crashes and gets stuck, you get a message saying 'External exception 80000101'. You can't even close the window properly, and you have to kill the process. If you don't try to maximize it, though, when you type the very first letter of a word you wanna look up, you get the same error message. If you then click on OK for this message, you can type another letter of your word, only to receive the same message again. Sometimes you can go on with this until you have typed the full word, so that you can look it up, but at other times the software simply crashes again and you can't even close it properly. I've already posted the log file for this new bug on my last comment. Hope that helps. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20866 --- Comment #14 from Zac <mrx(a)riseup.net> 2009-12-03 12:47:14 --- Hello, In order to try to solve the new problem, I decided to fully uninstall the Houaiss Dictionary and re-install it from the cd, just to see what would happen, since it wasn't working anyway. I ran the executable file over the terminal and a the full screen installation process opened, but that's all. It got stuck there, no progress at all, completely stuck. I just can't install the software with the 1.1.33 wine version, so I suppose I was better off with the last stable version, on which this particular software still worked, although not perfectly well. I'm attaching the log file for the installation failure that occured with the new wine version. Anyway, I'm considering to keep to the 1.0.1 version, since I need this dictionary for my work and I can deal with the old bug by using the script my friend wrote for me. Of course it would be more interesting if I could definitely solve the problem, no matter what version I'd have to use. But with the older version I can usually get it to work with a bit of effort. What do you guys think? Which of the two bugs would you say is easier to fix? Thank you very much! Thanks for the advice Juan. For me the easiest thing to do is to keep running the 1.0.1 version, because then I have only one small problem to solve, and the software can still be used while I look for a solution. I re-installed the older version of wine and now things are fine again. The Houaiss Dictionary is working fine, and the OED is just perfect again, as it used to be. I'm sure the old bug I described in my first post will reappear, though, since I've been dealing with it for a long time. That's why I decided to look for your help. The 1.1.33 version brought me more problems than the older one (no Houaiss at all and a worse OED, with new bugs to solve)... Isn't it possible (and worth) to try to solve the problem with the 1.0.1 version, since, although a rather old version, it is the last stable release? Thank you once more for your attention and help. It's possible, but much for difficult for us since we don't have access to the program ourselves. At best we'd just be guessing. Without access to the program, what's more likely to happen is that the bug just doesn't get fixed, except perhaps accidentally. What's really helpful for us is if you could: 1. Open a bug about the problems with the latest version, and flag that it's a regression. 2. If at all possible, perform a regression test to find out what broke between 1.0.1 and 1.1.33. Regression testing is described here: http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting This process is a little time consuming, and it might be intimidating, but pinpointing exactly which patch breaks your program goes a long way to helping us find out what's causing the problem. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
