[Bug 41599] New: Battle.net and Hearthstone play loud static when receiving messages
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41599 Bug ID: 41599 Summary: Battle.net and Hearthstone play loud static when receiving messages Product: Wine Version: 1.9.21 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org Reporter: ilmansonic(a)abv.bg Distribution: --- On the 22.10.2016 Battle.net received an update adding built-in voice chat. Now whenever someone sends you a message, a loud static noise is played instead of a regular click sound. The terminal doesn't show anything when that happens. I'm running this on Fedora 24 and PulseAudio. No other applications, whether from Wine or native cause similar problems. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. A few precisions: - Outside of games, the notification sound only plays when a friends sends you a message and the chat window doesn't have focus (i.e. opened on another virtual desktop). - Inside HearthStone, the glitched sound happens when a friend sends you a message (a chat bubble appears in game) but not when you send a message to a friend (which also plays a sound and I think it's supposed to be the same one). - I haven't checked if it happens in other games. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. Steps to re-create the loud static : - launch Battle.net - on the right of your username on the right top, you have a blue symbol - click on the blue symbol - it opens a new small window , with your friends - click on create channel - close the 'Invite to channel' , you don't need it - then click on the blue headset on the top window , to enable it - * hear the lovely distortion, that will drive you - disable it , and you will hear it again. I played with the audio samplerate , changed it to 48000 , to 96000, no impact. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. The sound is independant of Hearthstone volume. The problem is actually with the Battle.net launcher. If I change the settings such that the Battle.net launcher quits when I launch a game, the horrible ear-splitting blatting noise doesn't happen. I have yet to examine if there are settings to control sound in the launcher, but this is a workaround for now. There's a real risk of hearing damage with this sound. It's intensely loud. I had to have my system volume almost all the way off to be able to tolerate it, before I found the workaround. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. This was happening to me on Ubuntu 14.04 using Wine 1.9.16, as well as on 4.8.8-2 Arch using 1.9.23. It started for me on the voice chat patch. It does seem to be coming from battle.net as others suggested, however in addition to whenever I receive a /w, it also happens when one of my "favorite" friends logs on or off. Now that I think of it, I think this coincided with installing pulseaudio. I remember I was relieved when I installed WoW on Arch that I wasn't getting the loud bursts of static anymore, and out of the blue it started happening again. I did not connect the dots in my head until I saw someone say something about pulseaudio, so I think this may be a pulseaudio specific thing. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. Nothing to do with PulseAudio. Likely your ALSA setup was allowing only one application to play audio at a time, so the B.net client was unable to play its broken audio. Installing PA allowed multiple applications to play audio, and now you can hear the bug. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply.
