I have now tried compiling the 0.9.20 FreeBSD port and this still has the
problem (as expected)

I would appreciate it if someone could tell me how to replace the port version
with the package one (so I can see if the problem is to do with how I am
compiling the code)

the difference in visable fonts I got between the port and the package.
