I just wanted to say that on Ubuntu 10.10, fresh install, ATI prop. driver (fglrx) and Wine 1.3.5 the problem still persists.

At the moment, if enabled the Steam gameoverlayUI stuff seems to provoke a crash starting the game -- disabling that results in the same behavior as experienced previously with this title, go to start > gets to blackscreen > nada ...
