Screencast of being unable to switch among Excel windows

I'm running Mint Cinnamon 18 and I see a bug similar to #23108:

If I open two spreadsheets in Excel 2007, I can't reliably switch among them
using Alt+Tab. Alt+Tab appears to have switched, but the old file still has
focus. Clicking on the taskbar icons does nothing. The first Alt+Tab works, but
subsequently using the shortcut doesn't. Alt+` (cycling only through Excel
windows) doesn't work either.

This is super frustrating for those using more than one spreadsheet at the
time.

Excel icons in the taskbar

Also,

1. I can't switch using the taskbar either
2. The Excel icon was replaces with a white-on-red rhombus
3. The Window thumbnail preview for the individual windows is almost blank
