Hah!  The error message is wrong!  It really meant
that you need IE installed!  Running 
  wget kegel.com/wine/winetricks
  sh winetricks fakeie6
gets the installer to work fine!

I didn't figure this out, though +reg was trying to tell me;
I tried the beta build of the app, and the message is correct there.
