[Bug 16980] New: Visual C# 2008 Express: errors after successful startup ("New Project" window etc)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16980 Summary: Visual C# 2008 Express: errors after successful startup ("New Project" window etc) Product: Wine Version: CVS/GIT Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: thp069(a)gmail.com Created an attachment (id=18766) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=18766) Error msg box On lenny, wine 1.1.13, after installation of VC# 2005 (using iso image) from http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/visualc/download/ and after following the winetricks described at end of bug 5054, 1. the IDE starts up, fine, 2. the "New Project" window (still) does not appear when clicking that menu button, 3. in the "Open Project..." dialog, directories and files in the current directory are not shown (however they can at least be opened by typing them into the filename text box). The C# project MontyHall from http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/montyhall.aspx compiles, and the compilation is executable outside of VC#2005; however inside, both "Debug" and "Start without debugging" won't work. The former produces an error msg box "Unable to start program c:\windows\profiles\thomas\My Documents\etc\etc\MontyHall.exe" [see attach; file path correct] which might be caused by the intermittent symbolic link not being resolved correctly. The letter opens a console, immediately closing it, saying "file not found". -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16980 --- Comment #5 from Dan Kegel <dank(a)kegel.com> 2009-01-17 14:18:09 --- I think bug 5054 was about installing. It's good to open new bugs for problems running the apps. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16980 --- Comment #6 from ThomasP <thp069(a)gmail.com> 2009-01-17 14:45:17 --- I have got a .bz2 file here now which contains my .wine folder after clean install of the 5054 winetricks and the VC#2005, and after starting up once and compiling that project. windows\temp\*, windows\Windows Updates and the two ENU folders in the programme files were removed as well. Essentially it is "Windows + VC#2005" for Linux in one big file. This is 401 MB (615 MB uncompressed). Maybe a good way to get to testing apps quicker, if a transfer of that tree would be feasible and recommended (and allowed at all)? At least it stands against the VC# iso file size of 451 MB and the remaining single downloads. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

The app was installed improperly hence the problem. Again: check appdb before filing bugs (hint: msxml6)! Additionally: Don't use "CVS/GIT" version tag, state your *exact* version. Even if you compile Wine from source, use latest known release tag. Use the "URL" field to point to download location (not only in comments). Only one bug per issue! I admit I also did this several times (using show case/meta bugs) - with the exception that I deliver full analysis with solution. Use "depends on" feature to state the bugs this bug depends on. People don't want to read though all comments just to figure out what prerequisite patches/workarounds are needed, which gets to next point: When being initial bug reporter, post the *entire* recipe how you get there in this bug, not only referring to other bugs, even if it's repost from other bugs. E.g. clean WINEPREFIX and all winetricks steps, if required. Sorry for the rant... http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16980 --- Comment #9 from Anastasius Focht <focht(a)gmx.net> 2009-01-18 04:11:51 --- Hello, --- quote --- Hmm. When I try msxml6 with visual C++ express 2005, it crashes on startup with a stack overflow... --- quote --- Did you reinstall VC Express 2005 with proper recipe in clean WINEPREFIX or just applied msxml6 *after* installation? I don't see any problems with startup phase. If the problem persists, state your *exact* install conditions (Wine version used, clean WINEPREFIX, all winetricks steps). If this keeps on going you can't expect people to look at such bug reports. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16980 --- Comment #10 from Anastasius Focht <focht(a)gmx.net> 2009-01-18 04:30:35 --- Hello, --- quote --- Hmm. When I try msxml6 with visual C++ express 2005, it crashes on startup with a stack overflow... --- quote --- --- quote --- If this keeps on going you can't expect people to look at such bug reports. --- quote --- OK, I have to take that back because now I see you talked about the Visual C++ 2005 Express and not Visual C# Express 2005 this bug is about. What's the point of mixing different products here? File separate bug reports for separate products. Again: I don't see any blocking issue for Visual C# Express 2005 if recipe is followed properly. "New Project" and "Open Project" should just work fine. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16980 --- Comment #11 from Anastasius Focht <focht(a)gmx.net> 2009-01-18 08:04:24 --- Hello, just for information because I had to do this again a few minutes ago: I am rejecting all test results submitted to appdb entries if the simple HOWTO (dotnet20, msxml6) is not followed properly! Any deviation from this procedure, e.g. leaving winetricks steps out will result in unpredictable buggy behaviour of app. You might submit a test report again if you installed the app properly.
