The crash only occured when steam is in large mode and when you go on the 'store' tab. In the steam menu, click on Games --> Activate a Product on Steam. In the next window, click on the 'next' button. The following window should display the 'steam subscriber agreement', but steam crash here in the same way if one of the following font is not installed :
Times.TTF Timesbd.TTF Timesbi.TTF Timesi.TTF

The fix must have come from one of the recent Steam client updates, not from Wine.
