Wine cannot crash X, unless you're running as root. Just because native programs don't crash X doesn't mean Wine is the problem. I started with a clean .wine directory, downloaded DivXInstaller.exe (md5sum 5e57c489541f8596c5b45a9aded9e7a5). Installed only that, no msxml3 or ffdshow. You have to run "Divx Player.exe" with the full path. I opened a 10 second divx clip (can't upload, copyrighted material) and it played.
