It seems to be a problem with the games 3D positional audio. Using a native dsound.dll from Windows 7 works around the issue. The the PC version of Halo patched to 1.0.10 will have sound effects playing either louder or quieter than expected with some sounds not being played at all. It seems to be a problem with the games 3D positional audio. Using a native dsound.dll from Windows 7 works around the issue.

Could be the same as bug 39714, can you try reverting commit a83e8e88ea05822e21aace9e0b82060bfa1dc02f and check if the issues are fixed?
