I think this could be because the installer is trying to load graphics from the wrong path. I'm not sure what files are missing. Could someone install in windows and see what files are missing when wine installs? I had this "blank windows" problem too, but i think it was due to my graphics card. If I remember correcttly, the following "tricks" worked for me: running with native dxdiagn.dll, but also something like "WINEDEBUG=-all wine installer.exe" If it still fails that way, just try a few (5 or so) times, and see if you can get the main windows up correctly. This is on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS with a GeForce4 Ti 4200 and nvidia-glx version 1.0.8762+2.6.15.11-1. I don't get this. What do you mean with that?, you always have some kind of WINEPREFIX-directory.
From your traces i saw your .wine is in /home/ubuntu. Is that also your username (ubuntu)? (I ask because i sent a patch a few weeks ago, to set %USERNAME%, to fix another bug in this serious sam installer)
