I have the same problem, running Diablo2 (with no patches), wine 0.9.17, 
gentoo on p3 500, kernel 2.6.17-ck1.
I added "grub-install --no-floppy /dev/hda" to my local.stop
as a workaround, but well, actually this MBR thing gives me a bad
feeling..
