I have isolated the problem. It appears CentOS 5.1 + Gnome isn't able to display the vgasys.fon and sserife.fon that comes with wine. Replacing these fonts with ones from Windows2000 solves the problem. Alternatively, simply copying the coure.fon supplied with wine to vgasys.fon & sserife.fon will work too. I suppose this begs the question why CentOS won't render these fonts while other flavors of Linux apparently do.
Sounds like a FreeType bug.
