[Bug 11558] New: Problem setting resolution in Neverwinter Nights 2
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11558 Summary: Problem setting resolution in Neverwinter Nights 2 Product: Wine Version: 0.9.54. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-ddraw AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: torbm(a)yahoo.com When starting Neverwinter Nights 2 in fullscreen in-game settings for resolution is ignored and always defaults to 1400x1050 (witch is not a valid resolution in x-org.conf but happens anyway). There is no in-game way of changing this resolution either. I have found that I can change the games resolution by alt-tab out of the game and set the desired resolution in nvidia x server configuration tool and then alt-tab back into the game. I use Kubuntu (Kde) and this way of fixing the problem has been reported by another user not to work with his gnome desktop. We are both at version 7.10 of (K)Ubuntu. Neverwinter Nights 2 w/Mask of the Betrayer expansion, patched to version 1.11.1152 Bug has been evident since I strated fiddling with this in version .52 of wine -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I would like to add that (as far as what resolutions are selectable in game) when setting wine to emulate a virutal desktop, only then will you start to see other resolutions listed under NWN2's graphics settings tab. When the virtual desktop is enabled (unless you had a frameless window manager or the like) then running the game in "full screen" becomes out of the question. I will attach wine debug outputs for when emulate is off versus when it is on. Perhaps variances in the output could shed some light on this. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Turns out the game is picking the resolution at 60 Hz. Some background is in order: NVidia uses a weird hack that gives each xrandr resolution a sequential index, which it encodes in the refresh rate field. This refresh rate is fake, but the game doesn't know that. To override this behavior, edit the nwn2.ini file in your "My Documents" directory (the exact location varies according to wine configuration, but it should be the XDG Documents directory) and set the RefreshRate to 50 (at least for me it's the lowest index and it corresponds to the native resolution) and the resolution to the desired value. I'm not sure there's much Wine could do in this case that isn't a game specific hack. This bug is caused by broken behavior both on part of nVidia and the game. Tested this on current git (wine-1.7.37-260-g4c1791f) Winetricks prerequisites : - dxdiagn (https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34686) I am able to switch between resolutions without problems either if I use a virtual desktop or not. I can't switch to all the possible 4:3 and 16:9 resolutions between 1400*1050 and 1920*1080 however if I use a virtual desktop. This could be a limitation of the wine VD.
