It allows to keep debug symbols in separate files (and potentially keep them compressed). gdb supports it (AFAICT) seamlessly. While addr2line doesn't seem to supports it, the one from elfutils does. I don't know where Gentoo got the idea, but given gdb and elfutils, it's likely more wide-spread than Gentoo family.
