I installed wine on Ubuntu 9.10 (x86) and according to the appdb entry, i enabled no overrides and started the installer. Wine was installed as a package, provided by: http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu What causes this issue, does anybody have an idea? The installation crashes just as it's about to begin initializing. The install hangs with a "Setup did not complete successfully. We are sorry for the inconvenience" error message where I can choose "Send Error Report" or "Don't Send". It's looking for f5078f32-c551-11d3-89b9-0000f81fe221, which is MSXML2.DOMDocument.3.0.
Try installing msxml3 with winetricks.
With msxml3 from winetricks a different error occurs. Now the setup starts "Please wait..." and then it displays an error box: "Setup cannot continue because a required file is either corrupted or not available. Run Setup again from the original source disc or download location". It shouldn't actually fail on it. Just tried to create doc with CLSID_DOMDocument30 and it works fine as expected. Thomas, it could be a broken wineprefix or some misconfiguration. Office 2007 does NOT install on Wine's msxml3 though, so there must be a problem in this dll implementation .

You were right - lib32-libxml2 is not a dependency on the wine package in AUR so I was missing this. Installed it, though it doesn't seem to alter the situation. The log I gave you (from setup) still looks exactly the same. So it still gives you ELFCLASS64 dll load errors and object creation errors later? It probably means that you're still using 64bit modules, maybe libxml2.so symlink points to 64-bit module that's reasonable on 64-bit system. Honestly I don't know how it's managed to have 32/64 bit modules at same time, probably two lib dirs - lib32/lib64. Also I don't know how Wine acts for this case, we obviously can't use 32bit Wine with 64bit external modules for pointer length reason for example. What I can tell you for sure - msxml3 is linked statically to libxml2, I mean we don't have dlopen() for it, so any libxml2 load failure causes load failure for msxml3, which is a reason for next create object failure. We have to find out what's going wrong with your libs and proceed further to real problem if it's here. Note that distribution bug is possible too. No those errors are fixed now. What I meant was that the winecfg output is fixed now (no more errors) but Office still doesn't install and thus the log at http://bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=26284 which I posted before is still valid (installing msxml lib32 didn't change the output). So what I'm thinking is that we need to find the bug that's causing Office setup to crash. Looking at the log (I an not experienced in Wine at all) I see an "err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {f5078f32-c551-11d3-89b9-0000f81fe221} could be created for context 0x1" line, and something tells me that err's are more critical than fixme's. Could the ole err be the culprit? I'm not sure if the reason Office won't install on Thomas' Wine is the same as for me as our logs look quite different. Yes this indicates problem indeed, but it's nothing to do with ole itself. It's an output of CoGetClassObject that looks at registry class data, picks up corresponding dll (msxml3 in this case) and calls its DllGetClassObject function to get class factory pointer. Attach +relay,+tid,+msxml log that ends with this 'err:ole:CoGetClassObject...' please (no need for lines after that).
