It seems that a bad URL in user.reg causes Wine to crash if you try to download
the Mozilla ActiveX control automatically. I figured out the rest of the steps
to install Mozilla from:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_and_update_World_Of_Warcraft_with_wine

I appreciate everyone's help. FWIW, as a very inexperienced Wine user, I had
hoped a "gold rated" app would work out of the box. Oh well :)

Last line of user.reg should be: (or some other valid URL)
"MozillaUrl"="http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/MozillaControl1712.exe"
