One interesting find, IMO, is that the Oracle 9 installer configures
/etc/profile to export the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL system variable (with value 2.4.21)
which explains dynamic linking to the old glibc libraries on newer systems. It
took me 5 hours to realise that, so in case you're running a newer distribution
which has NPTL support but the linker seems to point you to the wrong libraries
for no apparent reason, remember to verify / make sure that environment variable
is not set.
