[Bug 13612] New: Graphics glitches in the Sam and Max games (just with nVidia?)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13612 Summary: Graphics glitches in the Sam and Max games (just with nVidia?) Product: Wine Version: 1.0-rc3 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: rixa(a)cs.tut.fi The entire Season 1 (and probably 2) of Sam and Max titles from Telltale Games suffers from odd graphics glitches. The games otherwise work fine, but the animated characters are incorrectly drawn. Many are either completely or partially invisible. Some, like the main protagonists Sam and Max, have some segments of theirs stretched out and pointing into the distance. This message may be of relevance, it gets flooded on the terminal launched from: fixme:d3d_draw:drawStridedFast >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glDrawElements @ drawprim.c / 269 The issue is discussed on the AppDB pages. Some appear to be having these games running flawlessly, and I suspect this is an issue limited to nVidia cards and drivers. I'm running the proprietary nVidia driver version 96.43.05 on a CentOS 5 distribution, with a GeForce4 Ti 4800 graphics card. I've tried almost every wine version from 0.9.54 or so to 1.0rc3 and the problem has been present throughout. For testing this bug it may be interesting that the full Episode 104: Abe Lincoln Must Die! is available for free at the Telltale Games website. Wine should probably be set to "Windows Vista" to run it. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I tried 0.9.59, 10rc3 and 1.1.1. I'm running nvidia driver 71.86.04 (legacy) on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04, with an Nvidia Geforce4 MX integrated GPU. It's quite possible we're dealing with a regression, though the most recent Wine version reported to work with the game is 0.9.56, and I can't get anything older than 0.9.57 to compile on my setups (Ubuntu 8.04.1 and Mandriva 2008.1).
From my tests so far, on both 0.9.57 and 1.1.1, the game crashes after the Teltale logo with an unhandled page fault on a Rage 128 and a Radeon Mobility 7500 using the MESA open source drivers.
On a Radeon X1950, using ATI's proprietary fglrx drivers, the game starts with Wine 0.9.57, but while sound can be heard, the screen remains solid white. 1.1.1 is better, but the grapics are so glitchy (crude, unanimated and untextured models floating around) that the game is basically unplayable. On a Nvidia GeForce 4200 Go with non-legacy proprietary drivers, the game produces the same results as described with both 0.9.57 and 1.1.1. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Is this still an issue in current (1.1.26 or newer) wine?
I just tried 1.1.26 and after that 1.1.25, but neither would give me any visual at all - the screen remains entirely black. I can hear the intro so it's running, but I can't see anything. I haven't tried versions between 1.1.20 (which still at least gives a buggy visual) and 1.1.24 so I'm not sure where exactly it turned this way. Given some time I may test those, but perhaps this is no longer the same bug? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13612 --- Comment #8 from Rixa <rixa(a)cs.tut.fi> 2009-08-16 15:10:20 --- I tested it with older versions of wine. It works the same until 1.1.22, with which it crashes at start. ("The program SamMax104-exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close.") With version 1.1.23 it works again and is still affected by this bug. That is the last version I can confirm this with, since with versions 1.1.24 to 1.1.27 the visual is entirely black. So technically speaking I can't see this anymore, but it's hardly an improvement. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13612 --- Comment #10 from Rixa <rixa(a)cs.tut.fi> 2010-05-22 11:11:38 --- It's impossible to say whether the graphics would still be corrupted, since all I have gotten since wine 1.1.24 is an entirely black screen. I haven't tried every version in between, but it is still the case with 1.2-rc1. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13612 --- Comment #13 from Rixa <rixa(a)cs.tut.fi> 2010-07-07 12:17:53 --- This may be related to #7411 and #21251; "parts of character extending to infinity" sounds very familiar. Comment 21 on #7411 also mentions that Live for Speed starts but is unplayable because of everything is black, which is exactly what Sam and Max does to me since Wine 1.1.24. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13612 --- Comment #15 from Rixa <rixa(a)cs.tut.fi> 2011-11-08 10:28:27 CST --- The newer branches don't support my hardware. In fact I can't even try the older branch anymore, since I've moved to Scientific Linux 6 and the older branch kernel module no longer loads (Compiles and links just fine, but upon loading it some ELF checks fail and module is considered corrupt. Have found no remedy so far). I'll see if I can try this somewhere else, but it may take a while. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13612 --- Comment #16 from Rixa <rixa(a)cs.tut.fi> 2012-03-07 16:28:24 CST --- Okay then; same hardware as in #1, nvidia-driver 96.43.20, wine 1.4. The black screen is now fixed, but the geometry bug remains. Tested elsewhere with wine-1.4-rc1 on a nVidia Corporation NV44 [Quadro NVS 285] card with nvidia-driver 260.19.36: it looks fine, bug is not present. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
