I see that your patch made it in in a modified form:

It's in 0.9.14, and I've tested with that, and Trillian doesn't crash like 
this anymore, so I'm closing this bug.

(Now the main window is invisible, perhaps related to alpha blending as well - 
I'll open a new bug about that after playing around some more.)
