They are not as sophisticated as Wine. Doing "cat sound.wav > /dev/dsp" is much
easier then emulating DirectSound.

Actually, that looks like it could be a duplicate of bug 13335. Do the patches
attached to that bug make any difference? Current git versions of Wine should
have a bit more available address space as well.

That said, it's certainly possible pulseaudio is just leaking memory. Due to
the more limited amount of memory available that would crash much sooner with
Wine.
