I tried the beta version. Sound/movies worked fine in the tutorial. It appeared
it would last a couple minutes, so I left the room, came back, and it had
crashed:

X Error of failed request:  BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
  Major opcode of failed request:  53 (X_CreatePixmap)
  Serial number of failed request:  2780814
  Current serial number in output stream:  2780818
