same problem with wine-20040716-1fc2winehq.src.rpm on fedora core2 
I deleted my .wine dir with rm -rf and started over
ran wine to create new .wine dir after this i 
rm -f *.* ~/.wine/dosdevices/
cd .wine/dosdevices
ln -s /home/none/.wine/drive_c c:
ln -s /mnt/cdrom d:
ln -s /dev/hdd1 d:
had to get ~/.wine/config
currently able to run gane with no video (super tough mode) All
I see is loading splash screen . I hear intro and can even manipulate charecter
