Commit 949708450b1a53adac5f09cbf685fe5718519eaa introduced support for effect binaries embedded in DXBC containers, but only when using auto-detection to determine the source type. That's undesirable; although auto-detection is convenient for interactive use, it's not necessarily suitable for use in e.g. scripts.
