I have been considering using IP.Board 
(http://www.invisionpower.com/products/board/) as the forum software. A 
few of my favorite sites are using it, and I rather like it. It is not 
free however.

Granted, this would eliminate the mailing list gateway, but as discussed 
prior, we are good with that.
