Sure, I'm all for making it more generic. What I objected to was that
your idea of generic seemed to be doing something like:

  if (socket) do this
  else if (serial) do that
  else if (file) do this other thing

which is just the opposite of generic IMO. But a truly generic
interface is clearly needed.
