Internationalisation (bug #452)

Hi,

I'm currentlly converting winhelp for NLS use.
I have to problems to use Va.rc,since I don't know 
whis country this file is associed to. (probably due
to
the fact I was asleep in history & geography :) ).

I looked in dlls/kernel/nls but didn't see it.

Can someone help ?

Yes probably. The .va TLD is for the Vatican and this is based on the
ISO 3166-1 standard. So one could expect whoever (MS?) to have reused
the same standard.

looking on google for some of the words used in the file seem to
indicate
that this is in fact "suisse roman" (romanche in English ?), perhaps 
Alexandre could give an hint on this very important issue ;-))) 

I don't think that Vatican guards being Swiss Guards is the explanation
of the Va name

Look at the top of the file:

 * Rumantsch Ladin (Vallader) by mbaur(a)g26.ethz.ch

and a bit lower...

#define LANGUAGE_ID                  Rl

So I think we can be confident, as Eric pointed out, that this file is a
"suisse roman" translation. Although I don't understand why the
LANGUAGE_ID doesn't match the filename, as all other files in that
directory match.

So to the original question, to which country associate the file Va.rc,
the answer is Switzerland. But maybe it'd be a good idea to rename it
Rl.rc, to keep the consistency.

Marcel, if you get this message (your last contribution is dated 1999 in
ChangeLog), could you help us on this (reason for name of the file)?

It's apparently "Rumantsch" (not sure about the English name) which is
the 4th Swiss national language (after German, French and Italian). It
is only spoken by perhaps a few thousand people in the eastern parts
of Switzerland. It should not be confused with "suisse roman" which is
the language spoken in the western part of Switzerland (where I'm
from), and which is basically French except for a few strange words
that make us sound funny when we go to France.

In Windows terms I think Rumantsch should be LANG_RHAETO_ROMANCE
(though this constant only appears in Wine headers so I'm not sure if
that's an official Windows definition). The file is named Va.rc
apparently because this is the "Vallader" variant of Rumantsch; there
are at least 5 variants according to

Interesting :-)
Would Ch_Va.rc be a better name?
Or maybe Ch_VA.rc or ch_VA.rc to match things like En_US, fr_FR, etc.?

I think Va.rc is fine. It's not like the other files have better
names, and there's a comment in the file saying what it is anyway.

I suggest we just ignore it until someone who cares takes the trouble
to make it work again. It's not like there is a huge public demand for
that language <g>

languages:
